Aims of any songwriter are of course, to write songs and at some point sell them.
Over the years I have made concerted, and sometimes; desperate attempts to get heard as a song writer. Lah lah Lahing it, is not a good idea, sitting down at a piano, is not much better. As a Non Singer, I don't really wan't to stand or sit in front of people and watch them watch me fail.
I have spoken to many singers, and musicians over the years, and the consensus I have gleaned; is that the vast majority of trained singers and musicians, do not write songs.
Those that do are truly unique in my view. "I firmly believe that singing songs, and writing them are two distinctly different skills".
I have come to accept that secrecy is a necessary element, with what has long since become my hobby (Well; obsession).
My rules are not to inflict a new song on anyone until I am sure it is tolerable to what I term a lay person, or someone who is just a listener, with no detailed knowledge of music beyond what they like personally.
Enter the Demo. First question is. Which one do I get demoed? The answer is: I don't know, because if you think about it, and secrecy is prudent. Then, you must have every song you ever write DEMO-ED! Outrageous. It really is a Ball and Chain of a hobby.
However all is not lost. Today we have Hard disc recording, accessible software that works, and so on. We have Twitter, Facebook, and all those other platforms Blah blah blah...
A word about the Song Writers Guild. They actually offer a constructive critique of individual songs, and offer a value for money demo service. The same problem is still there though, because of the amount of songs, and ideas in the draw. They also offer superb copyrighting service, "Drag and Drop uploading. That is real peace of mind. Plus of course the PRS, Performing Rights Society.
I shall content myself with the knowledge that what I now doing (The Website ETC), is the best way forward. Well I don't need to go backwards. do I?
Well, so...if I can hold a tune, keep time, judge the levels, get the mix right (Right-ish), even master it. mastering is not the dark art everyone worries about. Yes I have taken courses on mastering, and I think mine are clear, and don't clip.
Maybe Self Publishing, is the answer, and I might even sell a couple...Who knows? My audience may even be here .
Truth is, I am convinced the best or worst judge of any rendition of any tune/song new or old is a NON musician/performer. They can spot an off note in a millisecond, or stray timing without even knowing how.
